(Optional) Activity 5.2: Energy and Matter in Food Webs (20+ min)

In Activity 2, students discuss two different extensions of ecosystems using a video and song about matter cycling in food webs.

Resources Provided

Prepare one copy of 5.2 Food Webs Video Worksheet for each student. Prepare a computer with a projector to display the video and play the song.

1. Introduce students to the two “extensions” in this Activity: a video and a song.

Tell students that in this Activity, they will be asked to apply what they have learned in previous Lessons to two new contexts: a video about where our food comes from, and a song about how matter cycles in an ecosystem.

During this activity, check to see if students are making connections between the cycling of matter between pools they learned in previous Lessons with the content of the video and song.

Watch the video a few times to help students become familiar with the content.

Instead of using the 5.2 Food Webs Video Worksheet, have students discuss the video as a whole class afterwards.

Extending the Learning

Have students write and perform their own skit or song that models matter and energy cycling in an ecosystem.
